Mike Seeger –          Old Time Music

This painting was a rapid labor of love when I heard that Mike Seeger, leader of The New Lost City Ramblers, died on August 7, 2009.  I felt  so fortunate to have met him when he stayed at the home of Hal and Barbara Richard who arranged his first concert in Sacramento in the early 1960s.  He was so versatile, playing the autoharp, banjo, fiddle, dulcimer, guitar, mouth harp, mandolin and dobro.  His joy of the music he loved was contagious.  And he had a sly sense of humor, teasing me, after he gave me my first lesson on a mandolin, “Look, one lesson and she’s already improvising!”  (Translation:  I didn’t quite get it!)  Mike was Pete Seeger’s half brother.
